Presenting Breckenridge Film Festival
What is Breckenridge Film Festival’s mission?
We started as a small group of dedicated film lovers, who got together and they decided that a film festival in the High Country was a good idea. The festival started small, with a little over 100 people attending, but has grown since then, to a few thousand attendees over our four day fall festival. Our mission is to provide a diverse film experience in our mountain setting.
What role does your film festival play in supporting your film’s community?
We are the only film festival in this area of the high country. Being a relatively rural community we have historically had fewer artistic offerings as nearby Denver. Our presence compliments that artistic need. The festival has been an excellent addition to what our community already has here.
What is something people look forward to every year at your film festival?
I think what people look forward to most is meeting with the filmmakers. 50 -60% of filmmakers who submit to the festival attend. People get to ask where it was made, when it was made, and why it was made. They get to meet the person behind the film.
How long has your film festival been around?
We have been around since 1981. We’re one of the oldest festivals in the country!
How did your film festival come into being?
By a group of folks who came to Breckenridge and loved the arts. We had our 35th celebration last year and 35 years later will still have the founders involved. They loved film and wanted to bring it to the community, so they partnered with the Denver Film Festival to get it started. They also worked with film critic Jeffrey Lyons to host and bring excellent first-run and independent films, along with celebrity presence, to the festival. Ever since we have been able to fill that niche in the community.
What do you want audiences to take away from your film festival?
Ultimately what we want our audience to take away is a sense of how film can educate and inspire, as well as entertain. We want people to come and enjoy what they see as well as engage with it.
Anything else you’d like to tell the audience about your festival?
The third weekend of September each year is probably the perfect time of year to visit Breckenridge. It’s an excellent opportunity for people to meet filmmakers and enjoy the mountain setting.
