Chaun Pinkston is Competing in the Distribution REELPITCH Challenge
How did you get inspired to become a filmmaker?
I’m often asked why did I become a filmmaker? In part, I believe it is a calling. It’s one of the things I was created to do. The highest joy and reward in my career, other than the amazingly intricate process of creating stories, is undoubtedly the relationships that are formed throughout each project. It is a delight to work side-by-side with unique talents who all bring something wonderful, creating masterpieces.
Who were the people that supported the making of this film?
In this phase of production, I am extremely fortunate to work with some amazing talent. My director of photographer, Jason Cermak, is extremely gifted at his craft, and my dream team, Brianna Martin and Divante King, are true art geniuses. Other talent include music producers Mimi Williams and Chris Arias.
What resources do you use as a filmmaker? Music, locations, props, editing, crew, etc.
As a filmmaker, I love choosing the perfect location. That is first choice for me, and then everything flows from there. Also, I believe the story is made in the editing room, so I spend dedicated time there, piecing the story together very purposefully and intricately.
What is your next project?
My next project, following this one, is a cool made for TV series with a sci-fi feel. I’m excited about this one!
The independent film business is a difficult one. What keeps you motivated? Where do you see the industry going in the future?
As an independent film maker, I’m motived by creativity and opportunity. I don’t believe in limiting myself. I trust in my creative ability to draw others to my projects, and gain audience support. Even though the independent market is highly competitive, I rely on collaboration and the right relationships.
Which filmmakers, artists or individuals have most influenced your work?
I enjoy the work of Quentin Tarantino.
What advice would you give new filmmakers?
When I have opportunity to speak with other filmmakers, the first advice I give them is to love what they do and dedicate themselves to it. The second is to keep creating, and the final advice is to surround yourself with people who support you.
