Ashley Seering and Cory Byers Receive Regional EMMY® Nomination For “Renewed”
Fusion Doc Challenge Finalists Ashley Seering and Cory Byers receive Regional EMMY® Nomination for Renewed, A documentary about second chances, both for people and for things. We got to catch up with these talented filmmakers. Enjoy!
When we last interviewed you, you were announced as finalists in the Fusion Doc Challenge and you were going to screen at Slamdance Film Festival, Big Sky Documentary Film Festival and you received a licensing deal with Fusion. How did that go? What have you been up to since?
Slamdance was great. Getting to meet other filmmakers and watch their films in beautiful Park City was an amazing experience. Since then we’ve been working on a short narrative film and finishing up a music documentary that we’ve been working on for the past two years. We’ve also been working on developing ideas for future projects.
How has competing in Fusion Doc Challenge helped your film career?
We received some great exposure locally in and around St. Louis because of the Fusion Doc Challenge. Any time we have the chance to share our work and receive feedback is awesome.
“What we love most at Audience Awards is providing emerging filmmakers like Ashley Seering and Cory Byers the opportunity to create work, receive a great film premiere, provide distribution on a major network like FUSION and see them take their film all the way to the Emmy’s. That’s a huge win in our book and I couldn’t be more proud of Ashley and Cory!” ~ Paige William, founder & CEO of Audience Awards
Your short documentary “Renewed” has received a regional EMMY® nomination in the Short Format Program Category, Congratulations! What went through your minds when you found out?
Relief, then excitement. Even with a project you have a lot of faith in, you never really know how a group of judges will view it. So the nomination showed that other professionals see it as a quality piece. It’s always exciting to be nominated for an award.
What is the biggest lesson that you have learned through this whole process?
I think the Fusion Doc Challenge just reinforces the idea that there are literally stories everywhere. It just takes a little work to find them. Guy, the subject of the film, has already inspired so many people and the fact that we were given the opportunity to help spread his message has been a rewarding experience. It reinforces why we do what we do and why filmmaking is important.
What is your next step?
“Renewed” has already screened at a few film festivals. It was recently announced as an Official Selection of the St. Louis International Film Festival and it took home “Best Documentary” at the St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase in July. We are still waiting to hear back from a number of festivals. We’re also looking forward to participating in the next Fusion Doc Challenge!
