Introducing Filmmaker Barry Rubinow Competing in Kodak Super 8

 In Filmmaker Profile

Who are you and what’s your filmmaking background?

My name is Barry Rubinow. I have been making films since I was a teenager in the late 60’s. I started out making little films for English or History class instead of writing a paper. I moved out to Los Angeles after college to go to USC film school as a grad and have been working in the film industry ever since. Most of my work has been as an editor and I’ve won numerous awards including an Emmy for “Beakman’s World”, a kids science show that was on CBS in the 90s.
I have always continued to make my own films and recently have gotten back into Super 8, which is where I started.

What are you working on right now?

Right now, I am finishing editing a feature documentary on jazz bassist John Patitucci. I also just produced and edited a short promotional piece for the new app BuckitDream. I recently shot and edited a wedding video for my niece Rachelle, and am continually updating a family history film.

What are you promoting?

If anything, I guess I’m promoting my work as a filmmaker. If more people could watch it, that would be great. If I could get hired for the right project, even better.

What do you want the audience to take away from your films?

I try to be as positive as possible in my films, though that is often a challenge in documentary. I am basically an optimistic person, even in these strange, dark times, and I strive to have that positive outlook come through in my work. And also a sense of artistic creativity and expression.

What currently inspires you?

What inspires me now and always is nature, and the world we live in. It is so wondrous and awe inspiring in so many ways. It is terribly baffling that some people want only to destroy what is good in the world. (It’s probably obvious that I’m writing this in the wake of the San Bernardino shootings).

What’s your best advice for an aspiring filmmaker?

My best advice for an aspiring filmmaker is to make sure that you really, really love making films, and everything about it, because if you want to make a living at it, you will go through many challenging times.
